Munk from Gomma speaks to the DJ Bootcamp

We bet you thought that the DJ Bootcamp entrants were just partying all day and night at the Hacienda, so here's some of what they get up to during the day (what they do at night will remain a closely guarded secret...for now).

The entrants, from over half a dozen countries, had the opportunity for a discussion session with Mathias Modica (aka Munk) and his colleague Miguel from Germany's groundbreaking Gomma record label. Munich-based Gomma is already a force to be reckoned with in German music circles, being a ever widening circle of musicians, DJs, artists and designers who work on not just music, but also audio-visual, artistic and events based projects. Gomma have over 150 releases so far and 20+ artists signed to their label. They've been described by the likes of NME as "the German DFA" and by Dazed & Confused magazine as "Germany's freshest label".

One of the topics of discussion was piracy and P2P sharing and its effect on the independent music industry. Munk and Miguel said that they realised they couldn't do much about it. They had tried in the past, for example they had mediafire links removed, but soon realised that the few who knew how to figure out this kind of illegal download solution just would not pay for anything anyway.

Discussing how the label carries out PR, they talked about how they use blogs and social media to create hype around tracks, rather than paying for direct marketing. The power of a personal recommendation is more powerful than a static advert.

Munk also told about how he and the Gomma team of artists started to get noticed, by playing disco in Germany's famous techno clubs, which naturally caused a reaction. They  also discussed the labels relase musical direction and the Gomma guys revealed that although they always watch the upcoming trends they do not follow them, but try to use them with their own ideas.

And one last final point they passed on...know your channels, understand how things like licensing, retail and distribution work. That way you'll always have a complete picture, rather than just pushing music out and hoping it receives attention.

What do you think about it?
