Burn Studios TOP 10 - October 2011

Here's our chart for October which includes the 10 top tracks uploaded to burn-studios.com during that autumnal month of leaves falling, nights getting longer and the temperature dropping.

#01 Days Off - Geminius (FRANCE)

We're wondering if Days Off wrote this track while staying at the Burn Studios Hacienda this summer, but we're certainly feeling a strong Ibizan influence in Geminius. Tropical percussive rhythms provide a firm base for a truly epic keyboard journey into the Sun, while a muted male vocal whispers sweet nothings gently into your ear. Geminius takes a good while to reach it's full peak but it allows space for Pierrick to fully explore the hypnotic potential of the track, especially in the latter third of the track when he starts to up the flow by bringing in some nicely understated extra synth parts. With a suite of three remixes also on the EP it's a strong display of Pierrick's growing style and experience.

#02 Voltron - Be For Real (The Phantom remix) (BELGIUM/POLAND)

This effortlessly danceable jam weaves in and out of a dubby, garage basement sound. Punctuated by a “HA” sound effect that could be equally at home in a Proxy track and a big, big sub, the remix displays what 'future garage' is all about. It's like a drunken kung fu master doing the wobblestep dance while listening to MJ Coles mixtapes.

#03 Structure - Motor City Love (AUSTRIA)

While the title 'Motor City Love' clearly states the musical allegiance of the track to Motor City - Detroit - and the enormous influence that this post-industrial North American city has had on the evolution of house and techno music since the 80s, it also draws on threads from the other seminal cities of early house culture, New York and Chicago. Motor City Love's cheerfully keyed melody rides a upbeat and swinging bass line, while the careful and clean use of a good vocal sample beckons the listener into the promise that any good dancefloor should have for the dancer, the promise of soulful enlightenment and enjoyment. Whilst maybe not containing the same level of intricacy as productions from the likes of 3rd generation producers such as Kyle Hall, Rick Wade or Theo Parrish, it certainly pays able homáge to their style of blending the musical strands of Chicago and Detroit into the modern synthesis of what we still call "house music".

#04 Manaré - Pearl  (FRANCE)

Pearl sounds as lustrous as it the title implies. Combining a slow 2-step rhythm with floating smooth chords, 19 year old Parisian Manaré shows his style well with dreamy, echoing keys and a 'plinky-plonky' overlaying a nice, rich sub and grimey rising oscillated scale. This is the lead track from his second EP, which we've been waiting a year to drop since his first release, The Speakeasy EP. It's also been part of our latest remix contest so you'll hear many different takes on this on burn-studios.com. Check them out.

#05 Alessandro Otiz - Don't Let Go (GREECE)

Starting with a stuttering diva-esqe vocal sample and quickly launching into a firm kick and percussion section, Don't Let Go could have ended up being very generic and bland. However, as the extra drums and keys come in the track starts to liven up quite well. With stereo-pan effects on the keys, huge rises and a seriously Latin drum section, this is a very good primetime dancefloor number for those of you who like their house music to be fresh and funky, but with a dash of techiness and Latin rhythm. And when you read that Alessandro considers Miguel Migs to be an influence you can hear lashings of Migs and his peers' tropical deep house flavour throughout this track.

#06 Copycat - Disco Thang (SWEDEN)

The Swedish disco production scene has been slowly rising out from under the shadow of their more well known contemporaries in Norway, with producers like Martin Brodin and Drop Out Orchestra leading the way. Copycat's Disco Thang comes in a lower end of the BPM range, with a slow, steady appegiated synth layered over the kick providing the basis for the track. The keys on the track stand out especially, being quite delicate though still rising through the mix. Though this track will not be a dancefloor bomb, it's a good, chilled out Balearic number.

#07 Andrew Clarke - Hypnotise Me (UK)

Building on an appegiated analogue synth line and spaced out chords, Andrew Clarke's latest upload, Hypnotise Me, draws the listener into dreamy soundscapes that evoke the feel of lazy, sunny days by the beach and exotic, random encounters by night. As the track builds on this structure it brings in a luscious female vox, twinkling rises and a jaunty melody that brings back a real feel of that most hedonistic of decades, the 80s. One for the late night lovers of the sun.

#08 Club28 - Happiness (ROMANIA)

Romanian producer Club 28, currently resident on Cyprus, is unsigned at the moment but he's been thoroughly busy making music. Check out what he's uploaded to burn-studios.com so far. Happiness is our favorite so far, it's a blissfully chilled out number full of eastern charm held together by a slighty grumbling, dubbed synth. It's kind of a cross between chillout music and some form of dubstep.

#09 Haunted House - Deep Jungle (UK)

With the current trend for extra depth in all forms of dance music, it's been interesting to see where this leads many producers. While describing his production as progressive house, Deep Jungle doesn't remind you of the sound most commonly associated with that genre. Deep droneful synths built in several layers as the track progresses, evoking late night drives and dark urban cityscapes.

#10 Neitee and Yuetta - Time Capsule (FRANCE)

When most people think of French house, it summons images of Daft Punk, Cassius, DJ Mehdi and David Guetta and seminal labels like Roule, Crydamore, Ed Banger and Kitsune. Breton producers Neitee and Yuetta take a slightly different angle to the traditional sound of 'Le French Touch', emphasizing tribalistic deep beats and old school keys and chords. Time Capsule is their homáge to the flavour of the second Summer Of Love, 1987, and the acid house anthems that fuelled those times, but with a thoroughly modern subby feel to it.

What do you think about it?
